Release.

Shit bitches!

None of you care, but with no ado, we have a release date for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. 7/21/07. Right near the movie.

So in about 6 months, the whole thing will be over. I'll have to find something worthwhile to do with my free time. Maybe that can include having a life.

OMG I can't decide who to preorder from OMG. Luckily, it's a on Saturday, so I don't have to take time off work.

Ok that's all, go away.

A Winner

I'm pleased to announce that the Washington Post's "Idiot of the Year" award went to Laura Mallory, the Georgia mom who wants the Harry Potter books banned from school libraries because it turns children into evil Wiccans. For a time, she even argued that the books cause school violence until some people who had experienced school shootings were seriously offended.

I don't really care about Laura Mallory. She's not the first ignorant person to try to get the books off shelves, and she won't be the last. She's just the current Paris Hilton of social activism: an almost-attractive-if-it-weren't-for-that-weird-face blonde who gets lots of media attention even though nobody takes her seriously. It wouldn't be America without them.

What gets me about her isn't that she's challenging the books. I mean if you believe that witchcraft (even fictional witchcraft) is evil and corrupting to children, then that's what you believe. Fine. And way to go fighting for what she believes in even though she should just mind her own business. She's concerned for everyone's children, and even though it's for a stupid braindead reason, there's not a lot of us that can say we've gone out of our way for what we believe is the good of humanity.

What bothers me instead about her (other than her nostrils, of course) is that she's never read the books and she has no statistics to back up her corruption claims. That alone just makes her stupid, and stupidity is forgivable or at least forgettable, but this goes beyond that. I would really like to know, Laura Mallory, what right you think you have wasting our time with your little campaign if you can't be bothered to do a little research beforehand. You must have very little respect for the people on the school board who took time time out of their lives to hear your case. If you seriously thought "because I said so" would get people to do what you wanted, you're a lot worse than stupid.

So that is why this year, for the first time ever, I am giving the Rachael Ray "Bitch of the Year" Award to somebody other than Rachael Ray, who still wins silver and is detestable. Congratulations, Laura Mallory! You've made history.

Harry Potter and the.... oh... really?

So, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The long-awaited title of book 7.

Are you impressed?

Sounds like a witchcraft manual to me. Or a vampire book you're not allowed to read unless you wear crosses and eyeliner to your 8th grade class pictures.

Maybe the problem is the other titles were "Harry Potter and a Person or Thing" and this one sound like "Harry Potter and a Setting", which is pretty much less intriguing than the others. It was fun to try to figure out who the Half-Blood Prince or the Prisoner of Azkaban were... or what the Goblet of Fire did besides dry your throat out when you drank from it. The Deathy Hallows? A place. Perhaps a place of some holy evil

So I dunno. It's fine. A title was a nice Christmas Eve Eve Eve present even though SOMEBODY TOLD IT TO ME before I could GO THROUGH THE DOOR ON JO'S SITE TO FIND OUT FOR MYSELF. But still, I think some other titles would have gotten me more excited for the release (not like I need it). I thought of some of my own, most of which would provide much better insights into the plot of the seventh book:

  • Harry Potter and the Grisly Death of All of His Adolescent Friends
  • Harry Potter and the Long Overdue Jump in Emotional Maturity
  • Harry Potter and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day
  • Harry Potter and the Death of Harry Potter on p. 783
  • Harry Potter and the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Harry Potter and the Explanation of Why People Keep Mentioning His Eyes
  • Hermione Granger and the Welcome Shift in Perspective
  • Harry Potter and the Stuff He Learned After Hours with Oliver Wood
  • Harry Potter and the Dark Side, or, How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love Voldemort

There are more. It's not too late, Jo. You can use one of my titles if you want. You don't have to pay me or anything, just put a link to my blog in your acknowledgements.

What do you think of the title?
it sucks
it is awesome
i don't care as long as Ron and Hermione hook up
i don't care, stop writing about Harry Potter in your blog, you loser
